Today is my 50th birthday. A half-century on planet earth. It seems like a long time when one uses the word century, but it doesn’t feel like a long time. Time flies when you’re having fun… and I’m having blast!

I have been blessed with parents who loved and supported me unconditionally. Two older siblings who taught me more than they will ever know; and two younger brothers, who hopefully found that same inspiration in me.

My three daughters are amazing young women and a constant source of joy and concern. They’ve all made their dad proud and I’m sure will continue to do so.

I’ve been very fortunate to never have really worked for a living….. 25 plus years playing radio, working in the audio department at Skydome and then Rogers Centre, and now as PA announcer for the Blue Jays.

It wasn’t always like this. Sure, I had the cool jobs but there was no inner peace. I can’t pinpoint the exact moment, but sometime in 1996 I had the epiphany… What is was the common element in all my difficulties? It was … um…Me. That was when I realized that I was not the person I thought I was or wanted to be.

I made the choice to change myself, and the way I think. The choice to be happy. To accept the responsibility for my choices, good or not so good. To not live in the past or the future, just the moment. I accepted that I was worthy of all the good things that can potentially come my way. I quit focusing on outcome, and enjoyed the experiences.

Life is a series of choices. Be brave and choose. Don’t regret any of those choices, they’re all a part of a bigger plan. Don’t blame others when things don’t go the way you expected. Consider the idea of a blessing in disguise. I have learned that often the real message doesn’t become apparent until later.

I’m not a religious person, but there is a line in the Bible that has always resonated with me. “God is Love” . If I have one piece of advice, it’s spread the Love around. You can do it with something as simple as a smile and a friendly greeting. Forget your lousy mood and do it anyway, it’s impossible to feel annoyed when you smile and spread some love. Eventually it becomes habit, and changes your life in a positive way.

This concludes the serious and reflective part of my 50th birthday. LET’S PARTY!!

After talking about it for over a year, I have my website. Many thanks to Dave Pyle, whose technical expertise made it all so “easy”. (He’s a pretty fine bass payer too!
Thanks to Shaun Jette for his editorial assistance.
I can safely say that the blog component of this website won’t have a specific theme. I’ll likely blog about what ever is holding my interest at any particular time…and I have a short attention span.
The Blue Jays, who are a big part of my summer, will likely be written about from time to time. Music and drumming are a big part of my life, so expect that subject to pop up as well. I will definitely be mentioning The Unlikely Heroes. That’s my band, and one of my outlets for creative energy. I edit audio as well. Another creative outlet. I’ve done audio for video, commercials, figure skating and gymnastics.
I mentioned at the top, I had been talking about a website for quite sometime, and if not for a certain person giving me a push I’d likely still be procrastinating. Thinking on that, I began to consider the people who have, and have had, an influence on my life. My inspirations, muses and mentors.
First and foremost on the list would be my father. The man who taught me how to be human and a gentleman. (Mom certainly takes some credit too!)

There are three people who profoundly affected my radio career: Dick Peplow-my first boss, and unbelievably creative radio guy. Jim Hamm – Jim showed me how to build the formatic foundation of a great radio station. Terry Williams, a program director who taught everyone how to “tweak” a radio station to make it a giant.

From a professional perspective, Tom Cheek, Mike Hogan and Dan Shulman are three broadcasters that have engaged me. It’s truly unbelievable that Cheek isn’t in the Hall of Fame yet!

I must say I’m looking forward to hearing Buck Martinez doing the Jays play by play this season. Just a few days away from Spring Training!

Thanks for dropping by and reading. Y’all come back now, y’hear?
